Summer Exploring Leadership Program

A little about the program...

With The Summer Exploring Leadership Program current 10th grade students have a chance to gain hands-on leadership training on topics such as public speaking, fundraising, project management, time management, critical thinking, advocacy, community organizing and teamwork.  During a 5-week internship at a professional work place (nonprofit, business, and government placements) students will contribute to a substantive project and will complete a Group Community Action Project that address an identified community issue.  Lastly, students will embark on community explorations and will gain experience with interviewing and though meeting  community leaders, student will attend reatreats and much more!

If you are accepted then...

San Francisco Youth Fellows will meet at the Coro office in the Financial District – a 7 block walk from the Montgomery St. BART station

East Bay Youth Fellows will meet at the First Unitarian Church of Oakland on 14th St. – a 3 block walk from the 12th St. Oakland City Center BART station

About Us

Welcome to the Wellness Center at George Washington High School!  We are open every day from 8am - 3:30pm and are located in Room 121 on the first floor by the Main Entrance. Students may see the nurse or a counselor by appointment or with a pass from their teacher. Students may also drop in at lunch and after school to see us.  Parents, teachers, school staff and fellow students may refer students and encourage them to come talk to us.

Our Services

We offer support to students for personal and health-related concerns: chronic medical conditions (eg asthma, diabetes), academic stress, depression, family conflict, relationship issues, sexual heath and pregnancy, and alcohol or drug use. We also promote healthy choices and violence prevention with school-wide Health Awareness Events, a Youth Outreach peer education program, and expressive arts and recreation groups.

Our services are voluntary and confidential, which means students decide if they would like to access services and we don't share personal student information unless there are concerns for their safety and well-being.  Teachers, staff and parents may also refer students to us. Often, for more serious or long-term services, we will connect students with providers in the community or through their health insurance plan.

Our Staff

The Nurse, Coordinator, Community Health Outreach Worker and various Wellness Counselors are here on campus every day. We are here to work alongside teachers and parents to promote the personal and social well-being of students and to build the foundation for academic success.  Call us at (415) 379-8111 or email us washington@sfwellness.org to consult with us.
